The Benefits of Pursuing a Dual Graduate Degree in Business and IT

    Last updated 1 year ago

Earning an MBA can greatly increase one’s ability to earn an exciting position with a growing company. Earning an MS and an MBA can make graduates an even more attractive hire.

    • Career Opportunities: Graduates with the broadest range of skills are more likely to find options for work after school. Management skills are in wide demand, especially when paired with software and systems engineering knowledge. Technical skills make it easier to develop as an indispensable employee with several forms of expertise. Employers know that those with an intimate understanding of the product itself perform product management most effectively. Use the skills learned from a dual graduate degree to fulfill the requirements of the nation’s most competitive positions.
    • Benefits of Dual Degree Programs: One of the greatest benefits of dual degree programs is the speed at which students can earn their degrees. Many dual degrees can be completed in less than two years. Dual degree educations also give students a more complete understanding of their respective fields. This comprehensive knowledge will make it easier for graduates to network with other professionals and identify successful employment opportunities.
    • Program Course Adjectives: Graduate programs begin with a review of business fundamentals. This foundation supports education on global market forces, team management, and business ethics. Strong management abilities will help graduates to ensure technological projects are on time and on budget.  Students also gain skills in data management, application development, and information technology. Learning more about technological infrastructures can further inform a graduate’s ability to streamline their work flow.

Bentley's MS+MBA program is designed for students who want to be effective leaders in world-class, tech-savvy organizations. Story & Advice from McCallum Alumni: Ciprian Deaconu

    Last updated 1 year ago

    Ciprian Deaconu
    MSA, May, 2011
Staff Accountant, Scott A. Goffstein & Associates, LLP

The Story: As an international student, I knew that if I wanted to land a job in this competitive market, I had to go above and beyond a normal job search. Therefore, I started to apply to relevant positions in the summer prior to the beginning of my graduate program.  The professionals from Graduate Career Services offered me precious advice and worked with me to identify both my strengths and areas that needed improvements.  The Bentley Career Fair provided me the opportunity to first meet and speak with a representative of a company that I was targeting at that time. Although my first contact did not end with an invitation for a formal interview, I was not discouraged.  At a subsequent Bentley Career Fair, I had the chance to meet and speak with one of the partners of the same company. The information from my previous discussion allowed me to have a focused and engaging conversation.  This proved to be crucial for being invited to a series of interviews at the company site that ended with a job offer that I have accepted.

Advice: Here is some advice that I always kept in mind and helped me in my job search:

    • Consider your everyday work, whether it is group project work, campus work or volunteer work, as your most important interview. Acting professionally in all your activities will allow you to build a network of professionals willing to help you and give you reference when you need it the most.
    • As for your “dream job”, be sure that you know more about the company you’re interviewing than they know themselves. Keep updated notes regarding the targeted companies and your previous discussions with its representatives. Use this information and be sure to refer to it in your future meetings/conversations. It will help you show your honest and informed interest in the company and it will prove that you have been doing your homework all along the way.
    • Keep preparing for your “dream job” and be sure you can relate your previous experience and your current academic pursuit with the job you are applying to. Being well prepared and informed about the changes in your field will allow you to have successful professional conversions rather than dry standard interviews. For  business professionals, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek are just a few of the resources that can help you stay up to date with the changes and challenges of the business field.

    Best of luck!
